NousCoder-14B matches Google's systems. But it needed 24× more examples than humans.
Nous Research's NousCoder-14B achieved 67.87% accuracy on competitive programming benchmarks, matching systems from much larger companies. The model was trained in 4 days using 48 Nvidia B200 GPUs.
The researcher behind it, Joe Li, drew a fascinating comparison: the model's improvement from 1600 to 2100+ rating mirrors his own journey on Codeforces between ages 14-16. What took him 2 years of practice, the AI accomplished in 4 days.
But here's the critical insight: Li solved roughly 1,000 problems during those 2 years. The model required 24,000.
More concerning? Li's technical report reveals they've essentially exhausted high-quality competitive programming problems available for training. "The total number of competitive programming problems on the Internet is roughly the same order of magnitude," he notes.
This isn't just about coding AI. It's a preview of the data scarcity challenge facing the entire industry. While compute scales predictably, training data is finite.
